Long Before There Were Movies, Bat Caves Had Popcorn!

Long Before There Were Movies, Bat Caves Had Popcorn!
Long Before There Were Movies, Bat Caves Had Popcorn!

What is the best thing about movies these days? Is it the high-definition 3D? Is it the huge screens with air-conditioned halls, boasting of comfy chairs that hug you into a perpetual movie-daze and interiors smelling like a Chinese restaurant? Is it the surround sound that makes horror movies extra scary?

No, it is those crunchy cheese-topped large servings of popcorn that come in giant tubs. Over-statement you say? Then here is a suggestion to please the strictest of popcorn cynics (if they exist). Mix some cheese popcorn with the caramel ones.

We bet that with this eclectic mix of crunch meet sweet and savory meet sticky, even the dullest of movies (ADHM) would turn into a fascinating saga of adventure. And you do not even have to share!

Still not convinced?

Then know that popcorn existed even before there were movies!

The crunch of stone age snacking:

A special team of hungry archaeologists have discovered the first popcorn which is more than 80,000 years old. This is a special kind of corn pollen that closely resembles the modern day popcorn which has led the scientists to nod in agreement that even ‘cave people’ ate popcorns! This corn pollen was found below Mexico City.

It is believed that popcorn was probably first grown in Mexico in the US. But much before Columbus landed in the Americas, China and India were already using popcorn hundreds of years ago.

Biting on fossils!

The oldest specimen of popcorn has been discovered in the “Bat Cave” of central New Mexico. It is believed to almost 5,600 years old. In the tombs of Peru, a team of curious archaeologists found corn pellets that are still so well-preserved that they popped into tasty popcorn!

Scientists revealed that sometimes optimum conditions can preserve popcorn so well that it may still look white and fluffy, after the dust is blown off from it. A cave in Utah had surprisingly fresh looking popcorn which scientists found to be more than a 100 years old.

So, it is safe to say that popcorn was probably an important part of life for ancient Americans. So much so, that a 1700-year-old funeral urn has a painting of corn God wearing a headdress of popcorn. Even decorated popcorn poppers have been discovered from around the same time from Peru.

A popping discovery and fluffy jewelry:

The Europeans came to learn about popcorn from the Native Americans. After Columbus landed in the West Indies and Cortes invaded Mexico they were both surprised to see the natives eating popcorns and wearing them as jewelry and headgear.

Rumor has it that the Native Americans brought popcorn at their first thanksgiving. The traditional way of eating popcorn at the time was to hold an oiled ear on a stick over a flame and then bite the popped kernels off it. The natives even made popcorn beer and popcorn soup.

Soon after learning about this fluffy treat, colonists began to include this into their breakfast menu where they would serve a bowl of popcorn with a generous serving of cream or milk.
