Why are Jokes so Funny? The Science of Humour, The Humour of Science

YUPCard

As we run after the latest smart phone gadgets and electronified assistance, time and again only to circle back at square one, we tire out at the end of the day. To make existence somewhat bearable we all need an elixir...

Is young love the elixir to life? Poets and philosophers may indulge in a nod versus shaking competition, reflecting on the validity of the question and answer. But a simpler answer may be that the elixir of life lies in comedy.

Have you noticed how comedians also seem intriguingly intellectual? So, how does a well-timed piece of wit shot out from their mouths and are as intelligent as a joke?! How are these intelligent jokes even standing to be a joke without diluting the intelligence and also not compromising the humour?

Jokes seem to stem from intense human ambitions, elations and frustrations and the case with educated humour or more importantly scientific humour is to be a type of cultural defence against the fast paced development of technology in the modern society.

Contemporary writer and satirist, László Felek suggests that in the modern world laughter and science must keep up step with each other. He says that to laugh at a joke without analyzing it is only half the work done.

The word humour has its roots in Greek terminology meaning moist and fluid, and hence, comes with humour the responsibility of open fluidity and moisture! By moisture we mean that humour can be used to moisten the hard facts life, thus making them easy to swallow and digest. However, humour need not be moist at all times and often serves to be as much palatable as can be being dry humour as well.

As for the science of humour or the humour of science, no human being can be completely capable of comprehending all of the sciences. The world today is full of part-sciences and part scientists trying to dissect the unfinished. The situation has the push of mocking humour as man himself has hopelessly surpassed himself. While he is definitely proud of this being at the top of his evolution game, but he is no longer capable of keeping track of his own achievements.

It is an unquestionable fact that humour is not an easy feat, it is difficult to write and hence, is not light literature. That is why most comedians and comedy writers of modern times rely on the truth. Truth makes people laugh because it is so unusual. And the best virtue of any humour is the fact that it works best to relieve tension. Humour is indispensible in situations when there is nothing left to do but have a big laugh.

In earlier days, it was easy to laugh at the modest jokes that involved a drunken idiot, the quintessential difficult to please mother-in-law, a Scotsman or someone’s loud wife. A small element of surprise was enough to make the listener double up in laughter. Today the scenario is different, something bone-tickling can very soon turn into something offensive. So, to properly appreciate modern humour, one needs to have proper qualifications to understand the fluidity of the same.

But at such an outrageous prospect are we adding too much pressure on the future generations, to have ample cultural education so that they possess the incomparable surcease of humour in order to endure humour that is further fuelled by a state of perfection to which man and life will be further reduced to?

If you are keen on further analyzing the science behind humour and how it does what it does or trace its evolutionary trajectory right into the laps of modern Indian stand-up comics. Then join us at Comedy Visarjan II, a first time event that is happening in Kolkata.
